As October nights drop toward freezing in Stillwater, Hudson, and along the river, houses start talking. Most of the sounds have ordinary explanations.

Before tracking one down, note when it happens, where it seems to come from, and what else was going on.

Why Homes Creak and Pop in the Cold

Wood framing, siding, and fasteners contract as temperatures fall, and the sounds get louder as the season goes on. On very cold winter nights, sharp cracks from the roof or exterior walls are common, and floors creak more as the furnace dries the air. New cracks, sticking doors, or soft floors are worth a professional look.

Plumbing and Well Sounds

A bang after the washer shuts off is often water hammer. Homes with private wells will hear the pump kick on and the pressure tank click. Frequent short cycling can point to a pressure tank problem or leak.

Furnace, Boiler, and In-Floor Heat Sounds

Furnaces click, hum, and whoosh. Boilers and radiant systems can gurgle when air is trapped. Heat pumps may hiss in defrost mode. New grinding, squealing, or banging is worth a call to a heating technician. If you smell gas or propane, leave and call your utility, supplier, or 911 from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone out.

Wind Off the River

Wind along the bluffs can whistle through gaps around windows, doors, and attic hatches. Rattling often comes from dryer vents, loose gutters, or branches on the roof.

Mice, Squirrels, and Bats

Mice move indoors as temperatures drop and are active at night. Squirrels are active during the day. Bats sometimes roost in attics in this region, and there are rules about removal timing, so a licensed wildlife professional is the right call.

What to Tell the Professional

Describe the sound, where and when you hear it, and what else is running. "The well pump clicks on every 30 seconds even when no one is using water" gives a technician a clear starting point.

If you'd like a recommendation for a local plumber, well technician, heating professional, or wildlife service, just ask. We're happy to share names we know.
