Anyone can look up Stillwater, Minnesota. The Wikipedia version will tell you it's a historic river town of about 19,000 people on the St. Croix, twenty-five minutes east of St. Paul. That's all true, and it tells you almost nothing.

My family has called this valley home for four generations. I learned to read the river before I learned to drive. I've watched the old lift bridge close to cars and reopen as one of the most beautiful walking loops in the Midwest. And for the past 33 years, I've had the privilege of helping families buy and sell the finest homes in this valley — which means I've stood in more Stillwater living rooms, walked more wooded lots, and heard more of this town's stories than just about anyone in the business.

The History Under Your Feet

Stillwater doesn't just have history — Stillwater is where Minnesota's history begins. In 1848, territorial leaders gathered here for what became known as the Stillwater Convention and petitioned Congress to create the Minnesota Territory. That's why we carry the title "Birthplace of Minnesota," and it's not a marketing slogan. The lumber barons who floated white pine down the St. Croix built the grand Victorian homes that still climb our hillsides — homes I've been fortunate to sell, restore alongside their owners, and in some cases sell twice, a generation apart.

When you walk Main Street, you're walking streets my great-grandparents walked. The limestone buildings, the historic courthouse on the hill, the caves in the bluffs — this town wears its past openly, and it's a big part of why people fall in love with it on a single Saturday afternoon visit.

Life on the River

The St. Croix is a federally protected National Scenic Riverway, which means the view from Lowell Park today looks remarkably like it did decades ago — and it's going to stay that way. Summer here means paddleboats and pontoons, riverside dining, music drifting up from the park, and the gondolas and trolleys that make downtown feel like a small European river town with a Midwestern heart.

And the old lift bridge — the one generations of us crossed into Wisconsin — is now the crown jewel of a five-mile pedestrian and bike loop connecting Minnesota and Wisconsin over two bridges. On a June evening, there is simply no better walk in the state.

Trails, Bluffs, and Four Honest Seasons

The Brown's Creek State Trail runs from downtown Stillwater along a trout stream and connects to the Gateway Trail, meaning you can ride from our riverfront nearly into St. Paul without fighting traffic. Pioneer Park gives you the postcard overlook of the river valley. Fall brings apple orchards and some of the best color in Minnesota as the bluffs turn. And we don't hide from winter here — we host world-class snow sculpting downtown, and the valley fills with skiers, skaters, and people who understand that a river town is beautiful twelve months a year.

Main Street, Done Right

Plenty of towns have a "historic downtown." Very few have one that actually works — where the buildings are original, the shops are independent, and there's a line out the door of the ice cream shop from April to October. Stillwater's Main Street is the real thing: chef-driven restaurants, wine bars, antique shops that draw collectors from across the region, boutique hotels in restored 19th-century buildings, and a theater and live music scene that keeps evenings full. A Valley of Neighborhoods, Not Just a Town

When I talk about home, I mean the whole St. Croix Valley, and each community has its own personality. Stillwater itself ranges from grand historic homes on the hills to newer executive neighborhoods with valley views. Bayport is a genuine river village with deep roots. Oak Park Heights offers convenience and value minutes from downtown. Marine on St. Croix is one of the most charming — and closely held — villages in Minnesota, where homes often change hands quietly. And Lake Elmo has become the valley's premier destination for acreage, privacy, and new estate construction. Knowing which of these fits a family's life — that's not something a website algorithm can tell you. It's something a local can.

Schools and Community

The valley is served by Stillwater Area Public Schools, District 834 — one of the oldest districts in Minnesota — alongside respected private options. But community here goes beyond the classroom: it's Lumberjack Days in July, harvest festivals with giant pumpkins on the river in October, Friday night games, and the kind of town where the person behind you at Nelson's Ice Cream probably knows your name — or your grandmother's.
