A Community United in Gratitude
Every November 11, communities across America pause to remember the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Here in Stillwater and Bayport, Minnesota, Veterans Day carries a particularly deep significance. Our streets, schools, and local landmarks tell stories of courage, sacrifice, and enduring service.
From the Civil War to the present day, the St. Croix Valley has produced generations of veterans who protected our freedom and strengthened our sense of community. Honoring them isn’t just tradition — it’s who we are.
🕰 A Local Legacy of Service
The St. Croix Valley’s military heritage stretches back more than 160 years. During the Civil War, Stillwater’s own Adam Marty enlisted with the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment, one of the most storied units in U.S. history. The regiment’s heroic stand at Gettysburg saved the Union line and became a symbol of sacrifice for generations to come.
That same dedication echoes through Washington County today. From World War I and II veterans to those who served in Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East, our community has always stepped forward when the nation called. The Stillwater Veterans Memorial, located near the historic lift bridge, honors more than 100 local service members who gave their lives for freedom.
“Freedom isn’t free — it’s safeguarded by neighbors who choose service over comfort.”

💡 Why This Day Matters
Veterans Day is more than a date on the calendar — it’s a living reminder of what binds our community together: honor, integrity, and service. Recognizing our veterans affirms the values that keep Stillwater and Bayport strong.
When we attend ceremonies, shake a veteran’s hand, or simply pause in reflection, we reaffirm a shared truth: our freedom endures because others have defended it. These moments of gratitude knit our small towns together in a bond that transcends generations.
🏡 A Personal Note from Richard McDonough
As a lifelong Stillwater resident and proud Minnesotan, I’m continually inspired by the men and women who have served our country and continue to serve our community every day. Their stories are the foundation of what makes Stillwater and Bayport such special places to call home.
This Veterans Day, I invite you to join me — at the courthouse, at the Legion, or simply in a quiet moment — as we honor those who have worn the uniform and safeguarded the freedoms we cherish.
